What role does advertising play
in driving gender acceptance?
The advertising and media industries play an important role in both reflecting the world around them and also driving positive cultural change. With trans issues coming more to the forefront than ever before, we ask ourselves how the communications industry has served those who do not confirm to traditional notions of gender, and what advertisers should be doing to support people of trans identities, both inside our workplace and in the work we create.

I gave creative direction and helped organise this talk with Égalité UK which I’m a member of (the LGBTQI group of Publicis Groupe) and Viva Women; asking a question which is very pertinent to us – ‘What role does advertising play in driving gender acceptance?’

Through the use of colour the two main headlines of the campaign say two very different things depending on how you read it, opening up the debate to the panel discussion. We didn’t have any images to support this campaign so we shot our own campaign image forming the backdrop to the typography, the lily represents the delicate nature of gender identity. The bold typography did the rest of the work.

The panel included speakers from Stonewall UK and Mermaids, a charity who raises awareness about gender nonconformity in children and young people.

Say hi.
